I was debating exactly how to touch on hammer space with this one. Obviously I wanted the other two characters to react with great confusion and amazement. But Hammer space is not entirely unfamiliar to Anime as well as American animation. But Mako is leaning more toward the realism side…so the only thing he can grasp at is comparing it to "Combat Creature" containers.
When I started out I wasn't sure exactly how much I could use real references in this comic. I knew I wanted to make sure that no characters were the actual cartoon characters we know and love, both because of legal reasons and I wanted to tell my own story. But when it comes to names of things, like studios and artists and brands, I'm not sure I can get into hot water as long as I don't sell anything pertaining to the reference. However, there is something to be said for the fun of making knock off names. Such as "Combat Creatures" and "Lovely Locket Llamas" and the like. It makes the comics more fun too, aside from the obvious jokes, you can look for the subtle references too.
