Thats a synop there…now for the task at hand. Everything I have done, or planned to do in this comic is approached with some feeling of love or respect for the medium. Hence I wasn't sure how certain topics for which I could dredge up no love for, but I couldn't ignore them either. One polarizing figure in the animation industry is John K. I'm sure many of you have heard of him. He was responsible for the development of Ren and Stimpy, and several other ventures that were unsuccessful. He is an old school traditionalist that seems violently against any animation that is not his own or old, and shares that disdain on a blog.
Personally, I can't see eye to eye with much of his arguments, much like the art world every piece of work is unique and different. I love the old masters, but I don't necessarily hate all new art. Granted some cartoons may be cheap shills with poor animation and story, but sometimes the animation can be a stylistic choice, or the story quality can super cede the animation imperative clarity. Also, its not like animation companies hadn't taken the cheap way out for years, even hanna Barbara which gets praise from the man; is guilty of it.
John K. Is seen as a great animation innovator by many for some reason. The most I remember of highly animated scenes from Ren and Stimpy were all of writing tongues and disgusting egg based creatures…which didn't exactly entertain me as a kid. Yeah, R&S was not a show I liked as a kid…I didn't hate it either…I was just indifferent. Everything he's produced since has been ever worsening in content, so to me he became a name synonymous with "unwatchable colorful vomit". Also…I can not get behind a man who talked bad about Animaniacs and Freakazoid.
Anyway, the R.A. character is meant to become a mouth peice/dialogue for militant animation traditionalism that will be explored as he goes on. Just because I feel it is an area that needed to be touched on…I will try to be gentle.
Oh, and sorry for the rambling.
