Interesting fact: The inability to digest lactose varies greatly among different ethnic groups: from as little as 0,3% in the Basque population to as much as 95% Chinese. The disease develops due to the absence of the required digestive enzyme: lactase. The undigested lactose proceeds intact into the intestinesc - where fermentation begins. It produces hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane, causing bloating and pain.
