Interesting fact: Pork weeners are not kosher, because in Judaism pigs are considered "unclean". This, however, does not imply poor hygiene in those affable creatures. The thing is, before people perfected food preservation, pork was the quickest meat to go bad, which led to poisonings. Additionaly, pig's immunology system resembles that of humans, which makes it easier for diseases to pass from the animal to humans. Hence the "sacred" ban on pork. Ham weeners are fine, though. Another interesting fact is that back in Johan Georg Lahner times, the frankfurter sausages were made of pork only, and the viennese kind was a mixture of pork and ham. This is because in Frankfurt pig slaughter was separated from cow slaughter, and in Vienna the regulations were a bit less strict about it.
