This is one of the things that never made sense to me in the game, but I guess the torso was being supported by magic.
In Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, there's a giant statue of Arthur Dent throwing a teacup and the teacup is being supported by art.
Once again…thanks to Andore for getting me these magic sprites.
