Depending on how much you've leveled in RPGs, it seems most of the time the newer characters are underleveled and don't do as much damage as the ones you've had for a while. Chrono Trigger seems to be okay about the new characters being around the same level (though Magus is overly leveled)…I kind of imagine that if Kino had come with you, he would've been quite a bit underleveled, but that's just me.
