I've had people ask me where the term deus ex machina comes from. I majored in theatre in a former life, so I can answer this with some professionalism. It comes from Greek theatre. In those days, the gods were always represented by an actor riding in some elaborate contraption. The deity coming in at the end to save the day was a form of worship. So god (deus) came in (ex) a machine (machina). See? You learn something everyday!
