D. in his 'Severed Soul' state; When D. is knocked out, his soul is separated from his body, leaving the soul of the Reaper to take over. He can retake control at anytime, but the Reaper's form can take on the strongest of foes with little or no effort, meaning that D. can use it in the most dangerous situations as a backup plan. Unfortunately, the longer he stays out of his body, the more painful it is to go back.
