Since we broke the 1000 mark in stories yesterday - and held onto it through today, a small thanks for reading is in order.
This is the pencil version of Page 1, executed at Denny's in the middle of the night over way more coffee than I care to remember. I'd had this crazy idea in the midst of daily drudgery, and my brain was afire with the potential of it. It wasn't so much a new idea, as an idea of how to finally make use of this story that we'd been collaboratively weaving in the last year. Nonetheless, it was a eureka-worthy moment. In the days and weeks to come, you too will see the scope of the idea that blazed that day. I couldn't even begin to explain it to anyone else - but the frantic text message "Hawt elfie webcomic!" somehow managed to translate to Mark(Shirtgoth).
I scribbled some very bad pen and ink doodles (that have been since condemned to whatever level of hell bad art goes to) to help hold onto the thought, and a few more once we met up - primarily as an adjunct to speech. I, ah, generally find it difficult to communicate much of anything, much less abstract, epic flights of fancy unless I can draw them.
Once we made a few key structural decisions, I laid out a potential page 1, and the work developed alla prima. That is, if 8.5 hours and cramping fingers still constitute alla prima.
As you can see, the watercolor version didn't change much in composition, though I at least feel that the tone was significantly altered. At that point we both decided watercolor was at least a good start, and off we ran.
Thanks again, and enjoy!

Shirtgoth: *switches keyboard* Okay, this all begins several years back, with my first reading a semi-known webcomic called Megatokyo. Yes, make fun of me now, but I was like "Oh Em Gee! It has the epicness of books I like to read, but with pencils!" and have pretty much wanted to do a webcomic since.
I have pondered over the kind of story, and spent many hours trying to think of something and wondering how Fred (I still want to call him Piro, though) managed to get a story like that together.
By the time I got the text message that actually reads: "Hot elfie web comic. We have a year worth of plot. We have compelling characters. I draw. I need structure and deadlines. Why not?" my eyes went real big and then comes the "Oh. Em. Gee." on my part. I hadn't thought about it in a very long time.
We met up at Denny's that night, where I recall five cups of coffee, (which were later sacrificed to the porcelain god for judgement before leaving Denny's) and the first page began to take shape. For the record, I'd like to say Denny's has some good coffee…and really good cappuccino (Red thinks it is too sweet).
From there, we knew we had something big, epic, and, might I add, large, on our plate. We had to get some research done, and we had to get it done fast.
We chose June 21st to launch because it was summer solstice (the longest day of the year), and that seemed a good idea. We had actually done much research on various things, because the Denny's meeting was in late April.
Needless to say, I am more knowledgeable about the Anasazi than I ever thought I would be, and have this webcomic going.
