The Unraveling - Chapter 1

Happy solstice and merry yule everybody!

We made our deadline, if barely. My body has been doing its best to interfere, and last-minute text and image revisions have set us back as well…. and the delusion that I could have done the battle page in time to have it up during our feature week.

Ah well. I haven't had the time to keep my blog updated as I'd like either, but I'm only just this week back to being able to sit in a chair long enough to get much accomplished at computer or easel. So.

I tried a little different technique on this cover: I've been using the PITT pens more in the development stages of the pages, and on some of them I've let the sepia tones remain prominent. It really affects the mood of the work, so it doesn't seem right for all of the scenes, but here I think it works.

Please, don't strain yourself trying to decipher the symbols just yet. They're there, and there is a method to them, but only because I can be neurotic about details sometimes. As far as the image itself is concerned, it technically might be just as strong without them. I am however a bit of a Remodernist and I believe Meaning should be on an equal footing with Form. This philosophy informs all of my work, from my blogging to my fiber arts to my fine art paintings to this graphic novel.
The way I see it, if you notice some of the details I throw in, and they intrigue and/or mystify you, then I'm doing my job as an artist. The only failure is not marked by a lack of understanding, but by a lack of noticing (or caring.)

Perhaps it sounds callous to desire to confuse you, dear reader, but I think if you will be patient with our little epic, you'll find the journey is more fun when it's subtle. At some point in the future there might be a bonus page about magic, color, and symbols in Daidal… if you all would enjoy that sort of thing.

Speaking of fan service, we have broken into the three-digit ranks, and held it for what I consider a respectable length of time, so to reward your loyalty, I am hereby opening the floor to suggestions for a bonus page. What would you like to see? A portrait? A fight? Of who? Schematics? Architecture? Anatomy? Flora and fauna? Would you like to see a tableau of one of the characters so far at some other point in their history?

You have until Saturday the 12th of January to submit your ideas. You may comment here, comment on our blogs, send us a quack, or email us at tapestry_comic@earthlink.net.
I will choose the idea which seems the most amusing, entertaining, or challenging to me at the time. The choice is entirely mine, completely subjective and anyone who wants to be dramatic about that can talk to my cat.
The bonus page will go up on February 2, 2008. The author of the winning suggestion will have the choice of a signed, high resolution, limited run print of the page*, or a high resolution desktop version of the same.

So! Think about what you'd like to see, and we'll meet again later this week for the first story page.

*Oh, say 25 or so. I'll decide later. The rest of the edition will be available for sale, details will be forthcoming as they occur to me.
