A gate to a darker place

Atop the peak of a forbidding peak, in the farthest reaches of the mountains of night, lies an imposing arch of blackened metal. Despite it predating any known record, and perhaps even the dawn of man, no rust, nor any other blemish mars its surface. The peak is seldom spoken of by the locals, save in hushed tones, and widely recognised as a place of bad magic.
One day, without warning, the arch sprung to life, after millenia of dormancy, a plane of raw chaos-matter filling the inside of the arch. Because this was shunned place, some time passed before this became known.
