A long-neglected Warding Pylon begins to fail.

Spotted here and there about the lonely places of the globe lie a series of magical crystal spires, said to in some way keep evil spirits out of the world.
They are said to be the legacy of a forerunner race of some sort, and are very seldom interfered with, as most cultures have legends that ill will befall should they be taken away.
Then one day, unbeknownst to most, the pylons began to fail, one by one, slowly being consumed from the inside.
