Once upon a time, there was a powerful archmage that was terrified of death. In order to evade what he saw as his inevitable adversary, he created an incredibly complex mechanical replica of himself, and when he felt the hour of his doom approaching, he cast his most powerful spell, to transfer an exact copy of his mind into the machine. Something very much like him entered the metal replica, and thereafter took over, running his dominions as if nothing had changed, and every now and then sitting chuckling to himself, at the fearful wizard who forgot that his center of being was not his mind but his soul.
