It seems like a "be careful what you wish for" story, but that's not it. The daruma merely granted her wish, doing exactly what she couldn't say even to herself. The daruma is not to blame because it cannot be malicious. It desires neither harm nor good for anyone. It wants only its eye.

The ugliness and horror is all Carole's. The fact that she's shocked is only her reaction to finally seeing it in the open; she knows exactly what she wanted.
