@usedbooks: War sucks indeed, but you have to remember, they made the first move x.x. This is a bad thing for the mercenaries, but kind of a good thing for Orn and her tribe. There would be no way for them to defend themselves with what little they have without outside help :/. (btw, this story does not reflect on my personal beliefs. It's just that, a story, with war scenes in it :p).

@Asbin, Lilac and Hunchdebunch: Perhaps its remote activated? They probably wouldn't have them around if it didnt work out x.x.
