I was basing the idea off of Animorphs where when the kids turn into smaller than human animals the extra flesh goes to "zerospace" to be stored; thus the law of conservation of mass is maintained. BUT I like MarrockV's explaination better: "Mass is converted into energy and stored, then turned back into matter when it's needed." You need psychic energy in order to do that. :D

The core doesn't expand per say but lets flesh out of storage. The creature becomes bigger through doing that. A fully expanded creature where the core is empty is the motherland (more on it later). So it doesn't make it more of a danger. It just means the creature can't regenerate if it gets broken apart.
