Being related to the boss's wife gives you certain advantages such as being able to call him Jack instead of Mr. Smith. Also, Sam is allowed to go in and talk to Jack about things like Dragoness Scout cookies without getting into trouble. Of course, there is such thing as abusing his privileges, which he wouldn't do.

Doesn't hurt that he's the mayor's husband.
