Having a favorite kid for dragons is not the major faux pas it is for humans. It's kind of an evolutionary thing. You favor a child you think will better the genes. I mean, they count on all four of their children to do so (Liz less so since she's not related to Rachel), but as you can see, Sam and Rachel differ in their opinions. Though, they both like Beatrix equally, Sam (of course) favors Erin whereas Rachel favors Jonas.

Still, I suppose it shows quite a bit of motherly instinct for Rachel to come in and defend Erin.
