That's right, the extra body was made of ectoplasm. It functions like a real dragon body, but once the magic or whatever runs out, then the body collapses. The magic running out in the griffin world sends the dragon back, but since she was in her world, it does nothing. Going through the portal back to this world will also destroy the body. Since Erin went through a different kind of portal, it took the body with her.
