For the complete story, see the Back to the Past arc. I think most of you know it by now.
I know this might seem like this would be a time paradox, but Erin does fill him in a bit more over the years. He learns of it initially from himself, but then is reminded by Erin and given greater details, so it really is more of Matt relaying it from Erin to his younger self.
