Something similar happened to me a couple of months ago. I have this friend who I've been pretty good friends with for almost 20 years and he was going to get married and he was considering asking someone else from our group of friends to be his best man. I admitted to him that I probably wouldn't be a very good best man, but I still would've at least liked to have been considered. (I'm not even sure I was up for a groomsman.)
Well, they're not together anymore…so…small victory for me.
No, I felt bad for him when they broke up.
