I'd probably have exactly the same reaction as Martin if I saw the dragon caves for the first time.

Tall grass.  Tall grass is surprisingly hard to do with pixel-art.  I eventually got the idea for the look of this tall grass from the backgrounds of Zelda II, and made it cover the entire ground instead of just a few patches in the distance.  Then came keeping track of rows and rows of grass, all on different layers.
