Page description: Nick still struggles as the other voice calls out… "Nick" and then finally… "Nicholas". Snapping back to reality with a "what?" we sees Ashley Howe reaching out her hand to help him.
Commentary: And… the one person I promised that would NEVER return… has returned. I lied. Hardcore lied. What can I say. [del]I'm sorry.[/del]
The best part is, is that I lied about it then when I said it, and I didn't just change my mind somewhere along the way of "Lord of the Sweaters". The whole concept of Penny was originally to add another female voice and competition for Ashley and Nick, creating thusly, a love-triangle. This was way back before D4K: Comic Strip 50. You can even tell as the joke for comic 50 was, "nick will get a girlfriend". When I had the idea to play the brother card for Nathan and play it literally the next comic, as I had plenty of designs finalized for Jimmy then, while Penny was a forethought really, in terms of design, how she acted, etc, so I jumped to "O Brother Who Truly Art Thou?" until the next issue is where Penny would be introduced, as really, I had everything ready to work on "O Brother".
Somewhere in the blur of O Brother, I began to get the sense that, the guys, I was getting a good grasp. I mean, I knew how the comic would end, still do, still improving and adding thoughts and ideas to it as well, but even then, knowing how the comic ends, Ashley is always a part of the comic, no matter if it as a heroine, or as a foil to the characters later on or even now as a straight man-like character to the escapades to the guys, but, Ashley really, I didn't know what to do with the character. Penny on the other hand, as by this point as "O Brother began to wind down," had a good sense of what she was as a character. And I knew that she would eventually meet her end in Lord of the Sweaters, which was gonna be towards the end of Dribble For Kids, but I wanted to show I had what it takes. So far, I've greatly improved art-wise, considering, but I put Ashley away, to build a better character, to flesh her out, to let her grow.
All the general characters are based after people I know, and they took lives of their own. Ashley though, didn't, and that always frightened me as a writer, because I don't want the character to be who she was based after in real life. Cos then I'm not really writing as much, as I would be just re-telling my life. Trust me, I did not almost fall into a vat of bleach. *ahem* anyway, if you look closely, Ashley was never fully gone from my collective writing concious, and you can tell that with hints here and there, but I couldn't say she might return. I wanted to SURPRISE you. And so… surprise.
