I've been obsessed with Chinese Calligraphy for years. Growing up, I used to spend hours at my best friend's house and we'd sit and fiddle with her mom's ink and brushes. At first, Jackie's Mum would go ballistic because we weren't doing anything good with these really expensive brushes but after a while, I suppose she was happy with the interest we (chiefly her daughter) showed on her Chinese roots.
One of my favorite things to do was ask Jackie's mum do calligraphy. I didn't know what the characters meant or what she was writing, but I loved watching the way her hand moved across the paper and the way the ink left these rich, black, flowing lines.
Years later, I found this lovely lady whose passion for art and her Chinese roots have got her posting videos of her drawing/painting/sketching/even cooking! on youtube. My favorite videos are of her painting and the only sound is that of her humming or the paintbrush dragging across the paper. After months of watching Haiying painting and complaining that I couldn't find any supplies to fit my curiosity, my husband finally found this cheap little calligraphy kit at World Market. He bought it (presumably for his mom) and gave it tome for Christmas.
The ink isn't very dark and its quite grainy but I figure I can start practicing and then venture to buy better brushes and ink sticks. The ink stone is quite good and if I can find a carver I'll have him carve out my name on the chop.
