For those of you who haven't heard, DrunkDuck has been purchased by Platinum Studios; an interesting media company with a focus on comics. You might remember them as the people who ran the Comic Book Challenge a few months back or for publishing the original Men in Black comics.

Personally, I'm excited by this merger. All the original staff of DD is being kept (as far as I'm aware) and there's no plans to change any of DD's current policies (at least, not any made public).

Of course, my main interest in the whole thing is pretty selfish, since Platinum has expressed interest in working with creators of popular comics, perhaps helping them get their series converted into TV and movies. As a popular comic, this concept has my interest thoroughly piqued.

Some people are already crying foul of the whole thing. Aside from the Hippies who hate anything with financial backing, there are some people worried about the fact that apparently Platinum is going to be posting comics of their own on the site. This mainly comes from people whose apparent only form of advertisement is DD itself, and thus any loss of front page attention is apparently devastating. I think quite the opposite, personally. When a professional comic is on a site, then it's likely to attract more readers to the site. More readers=more people to read your comic. The more people we have poking around DD, the more likely people are to bump into your comic.

I'm going to tell everyone to keep doing what I've always told them to do; comment often, give helpful advice, critiques, or praise, and if you rely solely on the DD front page for readers, then you're not allowed to complain if your readership is small. It's sad, but simply making a good comic isn't enough to get readership these days; you actually have to whore yourself out from time to time.
