I've mentioned this before, but I try not to write Zock and Frantz as a "gay couple". Not to say that I won't make jokes about their specific type of relationship from time to time, but I mean I try and not write their relationship as though it were different from everyone else's just because of their gender.

This can be a bit of a challenge because, I have to admit, I'm something of a homophobe. Sure, I think that two people should be able to get married, love each other, etc. despite their specific genders, but really seeing two men together makes me unnecessarily uncomfortable. I'll even go far as to say that I'm going to treat someone differently if I know they're homosexual than I would if I knew they were straight. Not in the "God Hates Fags," sense, so much as the fear that they'll be attracted to me (which is basically the same as the uncomfortable feeling I get around women I find annoying who I know have a crush on me, which has happened before). Of course, I'd try and treat them normally, but then it's still treating them differently because I would have to actively force myself to not focus on that aspect of their personality.

I'm sure there's some Freudian thing about trying to alleviate my guilt about homophobia or whatever with Zock on Frantz, but I'm also sure it's probably not all that important in the long run. Now if I only put so much effort into making sure that Frantz accurately represented a French person…
