#1188 Dagiel and the Fish: Another Journal Entry

A number of people have noted similarities between Dagiel and the anime One Piece (specifically that he wears a straw hat and has a logn nose). While I can't say for certain that OP hasn't entered into the character on a subconscious level, really both characteristics arose from a desire to differentiate the character appearance-wise. I have to admit that I have a habit of drawing characters with too similar of facial features, so to give Dag some distinctness I thought I'd make his face a bit longer and thinner, and while I was at it I thought an unusually long nose would help make him stand out a bit more. Admittedly, though, it did seem to get longer once the character started spending more time around the ocean.

The straw hat came about because I just picture people wearing hats when they fish, so I gave Dag one at the start of this story arc when he's catching the demon fish. Believe it or not, the original pencils had him wearing a bucket hat, but I realized that made him look a bit too much like me, so I changed it to an oversized sun-hat that, by coincidence, was made out of straw.
