#1246 A Boxer's Tale: Painful Memories

I'll admit; I really don't know anything about boxing culture. I have no idea what the repercussions of being caught throwing a fight means.

It's sad, though, that in the art world at least there aren't any real repercussions for being a "faker". I'm sure many of you have heard about the Purple Pussy incident recently, and the sad truth is that Goldman's not really suffering for it. He can afford a legal battle much more easily than Shmorky can, and even if he loses the profits from that one shirt, it's only a small dent in his profits, and really the greater majority of his customer base has no idea any of this happened. Rob Liefeld has well-documented and obvious swipes of other artists' work, and yet he continues to have a fan base and a very successful career. Carlos Mencia steals a mean percentage of his jokes from other comedians, and he's got his own show while others struggle to get a gig at the laugh-in once or twice a year.

And those are just the obvious ones. There are scores of "artists" out there getting by on other peoples' work who are just more subtle about it. I think that we all can stand to learn through emulation, but to claim those creations as "original" is just sickening.
