This is based on the extra bosses Nintendo added when they re-released Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past on the GBA. They were essentially just copies of link, each getting gradually worse than the last, until it eventually got to the last one which, in addition to having all the powers of the previous Links, also had the power to turn invisible and breathe fire.
