Okay, so I have summarized the entirety of the Phaedrus into comic form for your edification. Please do not all jump at once.

The drawing of Plato is based on the way Raphael drew him in "School of Athens", a painting much beloved by philosophy professors and the pope at the time (Julius II) and largely forgotten by the rest of the world. I have been to the Vatican twice but I have not seen it. He drew Plato all tarted up though in red and purple. My word. I have taken some liberties with the toga, but I think Raph did as well, since being a 16th century Italian, he probably would not have known too much about life in 400 BCE.

Also here is a fun fact I just found out: popes are forbidden by canon law to have beards, and Julius II was the first pope to wear one since the 13th century (he wore it for a year in mourning for Bologna, then shaved it off again). Clement VII adopted a beard in 1527 after the sack of Rome, and then all popes had beards until 1700 (death of Innocent XII). I had no idea of the politics of beard-having among the popery.

I am feeling a little neglected, because I never get any comments. So if you like this comic (in general, or this one specifically) you should send me an email at ehlupton(AT)gmail(DOT)com. That is all.
