Well, that was confusing. See, the problem with many works of fiction (namely in TV shows, especially cartoons like The Simpsons or Family Guy), the plot at the beginning of the episode has nothing to do with the plot at the ending of the episode.
Fantasy games have a similar problem, where a simple mission such as "Take the Blacksmith's sword to the King for a festival" becomes "Save the kingdom from horrible creatures."
…This was one of the Zelda games, by the way.
This isn't a BAD thing, when done properly, but when the mission has utterly no point (like the one given to our friend Hero), an individual begins to wonder why he was sent on the mission in the first place.
