One thing to note about Kayo's explanation is that it only makes sense from his own perspective, in which Diamond was a nameless sporid who appeared only once. Should the truth about Zerco have been anything else, he probably would have also claimed it to have been the obvious conclusion and subsequently been able to give an explanation.
