I really thought that was cool effect with that last panel. Although the series ended before it became clear just what Skyriel was doing here, he was actually releasing ashes there. They would have formed into a wright who was going to attack P#6 and Joy. Without said attack showing Joy's usefulness to P#6 he would have ditched her in chapter 3.
