Poor Darkness, he suffers just as much in the currrent version of the script but he at least has more dignity left to him.
One of the major influences in my early comic was Poe of Errant Story. Although I've since stopped reading because of his tendency towards adult content (something I later found out was rampant in his prior comic) at the time it was one of a handful of comics I read. Prior to my start on DD I had ready Megatoyko, Errant Story & 8-bit theater as I had been told those were the top web comics at the time. (How others like Penny Arcade or Sinfest stayed off that list I don't know but when I asked around those were the three comics I was told about.) Of the three Errant Story influenced me the most. I very much liked its blend of action and drama. Of the three I felt errant did the best of job on balancing making each page work reading & continuing how it would read in a archive.
When doing a web comic this can be tricky. Sometimes a page that is boaring as a stand alone update is needed to flow when read as part of the archive, likewise sometimes pages that stand alone as great single updates to keep readers happy in the moment disrupt the flow of things when reading it as part of the archive.
Now of course I've read many more comics and done things for myself and I've developed my own style which is fairly unique. I really can't point to any one thing anymore which has influenced my style especially except trial and error, but back when I first started ES had a heavy hand in my writting style.
