For all the readers who made guesses on who "the hand" belonged to… I suppose now there'd be no doubt in your minds. However, from me the response will always be "No comment." Because I do not want to get a cease-and-desist order from her creators. The risk is tiny, but it's an infinitely larger risk than getting such an order for a dead franchise from a defunct animation company, for example.

She (and several other characters) snuck past my mantra of "No famous characters!" because Ed introduced them early on in the story conceptualization process, before I had set up any guidelines. She's integral to the plot now. Not saying that I don't like her, though.

Also, it's intentional for several characters in prominent roles to be highly recognizeable to the readers. For example, it's why I told everyone "He's Flash Gordon!!1" in chapter 1. I want to set up certain expectations for certain characters. It wouldn't work to have some lame character that no one has ever heard of to occupy her plot role.

Expect some surprises, though. I had told Ed, "If we're using these famous characters, then we're going to add some personal touches."
