Ashton Soul was made to be the perfect data processor for the alien Kha'Tahn. As such, he can sense and even disrupt–painfully–their processes. He would probably pick out Flickerflame, even in an animal form, in a pack of other animals—by sensing those nanites.
Each Next Leveller has their own specialized nanites; like a breeder of rare flowers or of dogs, each "strain" was designed to make humans better servants….for them.  Ageless' nanites control the aging process in her and those close to her. Attractive's can increase the cohesion between molecules.  Vigilant's enhance the senses by projecting the small field that can shift his sight and hearing beyond the human eye and ear's limits.
But Ashton can disrupt ANY of them.
