You thought the grandfather was exagerrating about a curse? At the time he said that, he had lost four daughters to Vigilant—three dead, and one fleeing into the night, never to return. A year later, he'd find his sister had been blinded.

Remember, this is happening in 1830s Bombay, in India.  So though wild dogs are relatively few (and protected) NOW, for instance, they might come across some while travelling cross-country last century.  Similarly, Helen Keller was unheard-of there, and although a deaf woman might raise a boy, a blind AND deaf woman would be considered helpless by the relatively well-to-do Wadia family.

As for HOW he's doing this—I refer you to page two and three of this, the "Burning Gaze" storyline–and imagine what a baby or child with those powers might be able to do.  It's left as an exercise for the alert reader…

Yet the incidents are far enough apart where no one could be SURE he was doing anything.  He would certainly be considered to be very, very unlucky…and unluckier to adopt. One wonders how much the greataunt understood before she took her in—and how many other relatives said, "No way!"

Next, more on the "curse". Vigilant still has some aunts and other female relatives left…
