He was already trying to pin it on Lafferty—correctly–as it turns out–but he had seen how big a heat source the FULL Lafferty makes when he changes, or what sort of thermal afterimage a swarm of insects he can transform into makes—

–But not–half a Lafferty.

Vigilant later got a clue that Lafferty didn't weigh as much as he should, but it didn't register that he should revise his guesstimate.

Jewel would do almost anything to save her father—to see him again. She knew Lafferty would later return the necklace, so she thought it worth the risk. If her mother had woken up, she would have made up a story about a nightmare, and Lafferty would have ducked down.
