I was dying to draw this little guy! And, also, to share the story of how he came into existence. A few months ago, when inspiration randomly struck, I ran upstairs, yelling: "I just thought of the coolest character ever!" Then I proceeded to describe him to my husband - that is: a caterpillar smoking the pipe. Brilliant, I thought! His smile vanished. "What?," I ask, oblivious.
"There's one in Alice in Wonderland. It's really well known. Everybody will get the reference right away."
"…You're lying."
I hopped on wikipedia - sure enough, there it was, smoking the hookah, no less! I was at least relieved to see that their looks were different, and judging from the excerpt I've read, their personalities are also polar opposites. Still, it's killing me to think that people will see my beloved caterpillar and immediately think Alice in Wonderland!
Not that I have anything against Alice. I'm certain that I would love it, and I plan on reading it once Fainting Spells is over, but in the meantime I try to avoid stories that fall under the same genre as my own, so I'm not too influenced.
Anyway, I'm just lucky that Lewis Carroll's caterpillar didn't have a mustache and a hat like Dr. Watson's : P The only thing I've had to take out of the script is the line "Who are you?", which is apparently the other one's trademark : )
