Air Raid Robertson onHere's the Third Horseman. He's commonly referred to as the personification of famine. This is a bit misleading though, since The Horseman more closely resembles the hoarders, businessmen, and politicians who profit from human misery.
The pair of balances represent what a shopkeep in the market would use to weigh and price food. The figures spoken by the Third Horseman are, at their time, horribly inflated to the point where most people would starve to death before they could afford to eat.
It should also be noted that the Third Horseman takes care to mention that the prices of wine and oil are not to be affected by the shifting of the market. Those are, after all, luxury items enjoyed by the wealthy.
Once again, I wasn't quite sure how to handle the Third Horseman. I knew I wanted to make him bone-thin, but the robe and the face tattoos were done mostly on whim while I was doing the layout pencils. I think they look okay.
I decided to make the black horse dark in an unnatural way. It's black in a fashion that looks supernatural and macabre. (Instead of resembling Black Beauty, which would kind of serve counter to my intentions) I like the way the horse turned out more than anything else in this piece.
I also knew that I wanted to put a few starving wretches in the foreground of the Third Horseman. It sort of insinuates the Horseman's callous disregard to the suffering of humanity. The pile of twisted bodies in the back was another afterthought. (One that probably would've been more effective with the Fourth Horseman) I just wanted something to use as a border on the horizon line.
