It's not that they don't earn much, the arena owners charge exorbitant prices for decent-condition battlesuits, which is why you have to be a rich entrepreneur like Mancala was to have gladiators representing you. If you can afford to buy, house, feed, and outfit gladiators, you can make a lot of money off them. The more money you spend on them, the better they perform. Anyone can bet on them, but actually putting gladiators out is a game for the rich. Sax's armor is among the best, since he was a champion and Mancala was so wealthy. It has an internal heating/cooling field, a built in communicator, and an integral system that makes it harder to break bones. Corban's is souped-up to give a lot of extra strength, balance, speed, etc.
