One of the many things that ended up getting cut from this version of the backstory was what Lyall had been doing with the Light. I didn't think of it in this specific term when I first wrote it, but to explain it simply and quickly, he eventually became a terrorist. He hated the Dark so much that he was willing to do pretty much anything to get rid of them. So he became a major threat to them himself.
