Originally, I wanted the old man's penis to be hanging out of his undershorts, unnoticed.  I figured it would bring verisimilitude to the scene because that's the casual approach to one's giblets that picture WWII vets adopting.  I figure it must be the gang showers.  And the prostitutes.  That or he's so old and unloved that they've gone numb from disuse.  I could also easily picture him using his schlong to wipe up his spilt SpaghettiOs from the coffee table.
