This isn't a jab on geologists by the way. (The last panel was originally going to say "astrophysics," but the word was too long.) It's just a commentary on the job market and the nature of higher education.
I recall an episode of Golden Girls when they were at a homeless shelter. A guy there said he was undercover doing research for a degree but later confesses he's actually homeless – and already has his PhD. I thought it was an exaggeration when I saw it, but having been through college and done my own seemingly endless job hunting (still working on it, btw), it seems pretty accurate. Around here, people seem incredulous that I can't find a job with my master's degree, but other post-grad types always nod with complete understanding.
A college education does not make it easier to find a job. It simply changes the job pool you're applying to. Unskilled positions don't hire people with advanced degrees for fear they won't be there long or they will have to be paid more. Positions that require a degree often require quite a bit of experience too, so it's really difficult to get your foot in the door. (But once you do manage, you can get good opportunities – or so I hear. XD )
Anyway, food service and retail are full of brilliant scientists and other professionals – mark my word; I've been there. It takes a lot of hot dogs to pay off one's student loans!
