And the reason Will/Lyss could stab Tolstoy is because the shield that was protecting him earlier was also preventing him from engaging in hand-to-hand combat. Yes, I know that much earlier I had Tolstoy shooting through said shield - let's just say it's the inverse of the shield invented in "Dune" (fast things like bullets can pass through but slow things like knives cannot).
