[575] Revelations: Succession

Okay, so now we know how the Wizard got his powers. And also he seems to be besting Aussie. Next week, why he hates Aussie so much.

Right, so I forgot to do this last week, but I'm going to make up for it. This time, I will be reviewing the War Games storyline that happened in the Batman comics back in 2004.

First off, I did enjoy this very much, but it felt like they could have done so much more. I mean, it was a war, but we barely saw any full on battles raging. It was all about Batman and friends taking down little gangs one at a time.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

The end of Act One sort of irked me. I mean, Arturo Rodriguez was such a huge Batman fanatic throughout the book, and then he sees his hero rushing to get an injured girl to an ambulance and immediately assumes he had something to do with it? And then throught Acts Two and Three, he keeps telling everyone on camera that they shouldn't trust Batman and his friends, despite in the very beginning saying that without Batman, the city would be screwed.

Moving on to Act Two. The death of Orpheus. Black Mask is this absolute psycho who loves to torture information out of people, but with Orpheus, he just slit his throat. And how in the hell did Orpheus, who took down all those gangs on his own, just immediately crumble like that so easily?

Next comes Black Mask becoming Orpheus. Absolutely no surprise when the big reveal came in Act Three. They shouldn't have revealed Black Mask until Batman ripped off the helmet and makeup. I mean, you almost feel like Batman was an idiot for not knowing, simply because we knew.

Now the ampitheatre scene, in which Batman and his allies take on most of Gotham's underworld. Could have been so much more. I mean, Batman told all the cops to herd the crooks to Robinson Park, but then most of them just walk into the theatre so casually. And then Orpheus (Black Mask) walks out with his bodyguard far away, no protection, and yet no one trying to kill him. And someone must have realised the cops were outside ready to take them all down.

Last but not least, Batman #633. Scarecrow's mutation, Batman ready to kill himself as long as he kills Black Mask as well, Robin promising that he and the others would surrender, but then they don't and instead leave without any troubles, and Oracle blowing up her tower and system just so Batman won't kill Black Mask, all three of them on live camera with the sound going, and yet she keeps her secret identity. Too out of pace, too rushed and too what the hell. Not one of Willingham's best issues.

However, aside from all of that, I really did enjoy it. I think I was really just expecting so much more. Oh well, it gave me some ideas for future stories and ways to improve upon them.

Overall, I'd say 3.5 out of five.

Have a good weekend you guys.

Until next time
