Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, philosopher and inventor who wrote important works on geometry, arithmetic and mechanics. He spent much of his life, researching and experimentating in many fields.

In mechanics he defined the principle of the lever and is credited with inventing the compound pulley and the hydraulic screw used to bring water up above the surface of lakes and canals and is still used today for irrigation around the world. He is most famous for discovering the law of hydrostatics, sometimes known as 'Archimedes' principle' and the creation of this principle is said to have inspired him to yell'Eureka!'
He is said to have also invented the catapult.
