So here it is. The bones of the story. I'm using the tale of the Flying Dutchman- the real legend, that is, not the Pirate of the Caribbean version. They did a fun job and I loved it, but I adore the real story, too. :D
There's surprisingly little information about the goold old Flying Dutchman out there. Sources disagree on whether the name refers to the captain of the ship- I went with the former, as the Captain is Dutch, and I wanted to name his ship myself. :)
Here's a great site I found detailing the legend in full. See where I got the idea to make the ship glowing and red? Yep- about a third of the way down the page, it gives a description of the ship as being in the centre of an eerie red glow.

Anyway, I'm very fond of my Van Der Decken. Hundreds of years of endlessly sailing the oceans have taken all the fire and fight that led him to deal with the devil out of him, leaving him a cynical, depressed sort of shade…. but we'll see if circumstances can cause that to change, eh? ;)
Also, thanks to everyone for reading/commenting. I've been feeling a bit down lately, and less inspired to keep drawing, though I really want to get this story out. Your readership, support and comments really help me keep this up, and it's a rewarding hobby. :) I've been getting nice e-mails lately, and looking at the fan art thread in my forum really shows me how much support I have. You're all very much appreciated.
