1. Fred loved his boy, but had no choice but to keep him locked in the cellar…
2. Donnie was just too big to handle, and crazier than a shit-house rat.
3. And he had an appetite, too. Fred would occasionally feed him one of the Mollies. It was a way to keep their population in check, and it satisfied the sadistic impulses he had felt stirring within him since his wife's untimely demise.
