"You were almost a werewolf sandwich!"
Bartholomew Bertrand arrives! His name and monster hunting outfit paying homage to the best and most quotable Resident Evil character of all time, Barry Burton! (There is another character with the last name Burton in this comic, but his name is less an homage and more that I got a lot of character names both first and last from street signs around Grand Rapids.)
He's not knockoff/expy Barry B. because that'd be lazy as all hell, but I thought it would be fun to pay a little tribute to a game that had some influence on my early art with his monster-killing-mercenary outfit. That and the name are where the similarities end (Bert's not a redhead for one thing!)
I may not care for RE4 and beyond, but the survival horror genre of games were a big inspiration for my earlier work. RE1-2, the Silent Hill franchise, and Hunter: The Reckoning to some extent even though I was well into making my first comic by the time I played that one.
At any rate, I tend to avoid overt references to things as I find a lot of comics that do this to be incredibly lazy in their execution and just capitalizing on what is currently popular. Not trying to be the "stop having fun, guys!" person but I rather see other comic characters cameo than whatever show is trending on tumblr filling out a crowd!
